What age do you have to be to start K?

A child must be 5- years-old by December 31, 2010 to begin Kindergarten.

When is the application deadline?

April 5^th, 2010 at 5pm.

Can I fill out 1 application for all 7 schools?

Yes. When you submit an application you are entered into the Lottery for all 7 schools.  However, if you select option two, you can choose to apply only to certain HSAs

Where are your schools located?

We will be opening 3 new schools in the Bronx and Harlem for the 2010-2011 school year. Check back soon for exact locations. Our current schools are located at:

How do you determine admission?

Admission is by a fair and random lottery.  By law, we must give preference to the students living in the community school district of the HSAs to which the student applies.  For example, if you live in District 3, you will get preference in the lottery for HSA1and HSA4.   We also have a sibling policy where we give preference to siblings.

Is there an application fee?

No.

Does it cost anything to attend the school?

No, we are a public school.  It is free.

Do you have Special Education Services?

Yes.  We have Special Ed accommodations for speech, occupational therapy, and SETSS. 

If my child is an English Language Learner, are they allowed to apply?

Yes. 

I was on the wait list last year, do I go before everyone who applies this year?

No.  Applications do not carry over from year to year.  If you applied last year and did not get in, you must apply again this year and your application will go in the lottery.

I have a child attending HSA. Do I need to fill out an application for a younger sibling?

Yes. We need an application for every student.

When will we find out the results?

Thursday, April 22^nd, 2010 at the 369^th Harlem Armory located on 5^th Avenue between 142^nd and 143^rd Streets.   If you submit an application, you will get an invitation to the lottery in April.  Please check your email regularly for updates.

What grades do you offer?

Our school will eventually serve grades K-8.  We accept applications for Kindergarten, 1^st and 2^nd grade. Our 2^nd grade spots are available only at HSA1, HSA2, HSA3 and HSA4

When is the first day of the 2010-2011 school year?

We will have a calendar and schedule set later this spring but school always begins in August.

Do you have an Afterschool Program?

No. The current school hours are 7:40AM – 4:30PM (4PM for K) but this is subject to change next year.  Parents are expected to make their own afterschool arrangements. 

Can I apply at one of your schools?

Yes, but we encourage you to apply online. It’s quick and easy.

What happens if I don’t send my application in on time?

Late applications will be placed on the waiting list in the order received.

Does Harlem Success offer busing?

We do not provide bus service to our students, a family member or friend must drop off and pick up HSA students each day.
