JIM MANLY

Principal, Harlem Success Academy 2

Mr. Manly, principal of the school affectionately referred to by his team as “The Deuce”, in education for over 15 years.  He began his career right out of college as a junior high school teacher in West Harlem.  He then served Teach For America as both a Regional Director and Recruiter, helping to raise significant funds in addition to implementing a regional support program.  After being awarded his MA in public policy from Harvard University, Mr. Manly received a fellowship to assist DreamYard with their plans to open a public school in New York City.  He then became Assistant Director at Teaneck Community Charter School in New Jersey, where he taught and helped to restructure the school.  He continued to pursue his interest in educational administration at Manhattan Charter School as its principal before bringing his experience and leadership prowess to the Harlem Success team.  Mr. Manly was a Harlem Success leadership resident for a year before he became foundingprincipal of “The Deuce” in 2008.  Mr. Manly has a BA in English from Union College, an MA in Public Policy from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, and principal certification from William Paterson University.

EMILY GOULD

MITCHELL CENTER

Mr. Center began his career in education twelve years ago as an AmeriCorps volunteer teaching math and literacy to K-2 students in Austin, Texas.  Upon completion he moved back to Brooklyn where he taught at both PS 172 and PS 124.  After five years in the classroom he left the schools to take on the position as camp director for the Fiver Children's Foundation where he designed and led educational and recreational programs for children ages 8-17.  Determined to take his leadership experience back to the public schools, Mr. Center joined New Leaders for New Schools in 2005 and completed a yearlong principal's residency in Brooklyn's PS 3.  He joined HSA in December of 2006 as the assistant principal.  Mr. Center became the founding principal of HSA4 in 2008.  Mr. Center holds a BA in Sociology from SUNY New Paltz, a MA in Developmental Psychology from Teachers College at Columbia University and a MS in Educational Leadership from PACE University.  Mr. Center is the father of two young children and lives in Brooklyn.
